Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is a more complex procedure that is designed not only to restrict food intake but also changes the body’s normal digestion and absorption processes. This procedure involve creating a small upper stomach pouch. Food absorption is reduced by redirecting the food from the small pouch to a lower portion of the small intestine.

Because the new stomach pouch restricts how much you can eat, the feeling of fullness is easily achieved. This procedure achieves weight loss by restricting calorie intake and absorption. It also reduces ghrelin, a hormone related to feelings of hunger.

Because the food is redirected from the small pouch directly into the small intestine, the change that occurs in the small intestines also limits how calories and nutrients are absorbed. A patient who chooses the bypass must maintain appropriate levels of micro-nutrients with lifelong vitamin and protein supplementation. Follow-up visits with your surgeon are necessary in order to achieve desired weight loss.
