Am I A Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?
At Norwood Bariatric Clinic, every patient is an individual, and for every patient there is an individualized solution we will develop with you as our client. Your personal health goals are central to our efforts in your care. The determination of which procedure best fits your needs is considered on a case by case basis.
General Requirements:
- Minimum age limit of 18.
- BMI (body mass index) of 40 or greater. Generally, this indicates someone who is 100 or more pounds overweight.
- BMI of 35 or greater with at least one comorbid condition (a disease related to obesity).
- Comorbid Conditions can include:
- Poorly controlled hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Diabetes Type II
- Coronary Artery Disease
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Severe Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- Severe Degenerative Joint Disease
- Dyslipidemia or Hyperlipidemia
- Pulmonary Hypertension
- A person with acceptable operative risks (requires a letter of referral from your primary care physician)
- A person who remains morbidly obese after multiple attempts at non-surgical weight loss approaches (preferably under a physician’s supervision). Many insurance companies require physician supervised weight loss as a condition for surgery approval.
- A person who has a good understanding of the operation, the necessary dietary restrictions and potential risk of complications.
- A person who is willing to commit to lifelong healthy eating and physical activity habits, medical follow-up and vitamin supplementation.
